Executive Branch

The executive branch of the government is responsible for carrying out and enforcing the federal laws Congress makes.

The PRESIDENT

POTUS is the star DJ at the party in the USA!  He/she decides the theme and is in charge of security, too.  (Commander of all branches of our military.)  This is the ONLY position for which we all get to cast a vote!

The VICE PRESIDENT is the Prez’s twinsie/ Super BFF.  He helps plan and host all the parties! He’ll step up if the POTUS is incapacitated.

The CABINET is made up of POTUS’ 15 BFs.  They all give the President advice on how the party should go.  The Prez gets to pick these friends but the Senate has to approve.  They are all called SECRETARY OF:

  1. The Department of STATE
  2. The Department of TREASURY
  3. The Department of DEFENSE
  4. The Department of JUSTICE, (called Attorney General instead of Secretary… Lawyers!)
  5. of INTERIOR
  6. of AGRICULTURE
  7. of COMMERCE
  8. of LABOR
  9. of HEALTH and HUMAN SERVICES
  10. of HOUSING and URBAN DEVELOPMENT
  11. of TRANSPORTATION
  12. of ENERGY
  13. of EDUCATION
  14. of VETERAN AFFAIRS
  15. of HOMELAND SECURITY

They are listed here in the order of succession to the throne, after VP, Speaker of the House, and President pro tem. of the Senate.  Remember in Battlestar Galactica  how Secretary of Education Laura Roslin became President? Like that.

The EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT was added to the party planning in 1939 when Franklin D. Roosevelt felt he needed a little more help running the country.  The EOP varies with each presidency.  FDR had a staff of about 600.  The Nixon/Ford administration had over 5,000! Now it usually ranges between 2,000 to 2,500 helpers.  These people include the POTUS’ BFFs and closest advisors.  They cannot be a member of Congress. S/he appoints them and they are usually considered to be experts in their various fields.  Top level officials are called Assistant to the President.  Second level staff are called Deputy Assistant to the President and third level are called Special Assistant to the President.
